Streamlining Your Tutoring Business

So far, I’ve written a number of posts on marketing your tutoring business. Now it’s time to discuss something which is equally important – streamlining your tutoring business. Streamlining means making your operation more efficient so you can free up time to focus on more profitable areas of the business such as marketing. Here are a few ways of streamlining your tutoring business:

  1. A suitable workbook – Buy a suitable workbook from WHSmith as opposed to digging up exercises on the internet. The latter can be quite time-consuming. You’re better off visiting a local book store and going through their educational books. The reason being is it’s highly likely that a workbook will be divided into sections. Each section will cover a small area of the syllabus. It will begin with explanations of the key concepts, followed by exercises to test a reader’s understanding. A workbook will aid in planning too because you can use the sections in the book to structure your lessons going forward. For example, you may structure your lessons in this way – go through the theory part of each section during lesson and set the exercise for homework. If you’d like to use my GCSE Maths 4 Week Fast Track Program in your tutoring service, drop me an email at jeevan@passgcsemaths.com.
  2. Solutions to exercises – You should give these to your students so they can mark their own work. Encourage them to mark their own work first and you can verify their marking afterwards. You save a lot of time by doing this because you’re not marking their work ‘in full’. Allowing the student to mark their own work is also a very good learning process. I advise my students to mark their own work all the time!
  3. Matching up students – If you’re tutoring students of the same age, place them on the same tuition program. It makes you more organised because you’re covering the same material in each lesson. You’re not teaching different concepts to each child.
  4. Use e-reports I use to handwrite my progress reports to parents. This is highly inefficient. You should produce them online. Not only does it make it quicker to produce but you can also duplicate lesson plans easily. It’s just a simple ‘copy and paste’. Here is an example of a progress report I send to parents: Example Log
